The hot new thing in saving money is to make your own diesel fuel through the biodiesel process. Biodiesel can be made from various components such as; vegetable oil, animal fats, and waste or recycled oils and fats, such as waste fryer oil. The Biodiesel is made using the process of transesterification.
Transesterification is the process of using an alcohol such as methanol as an emulsifier in the presence of a catalyst, such as sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide, to chemically break up the molecules of the waste oils into methyl or ethyl esters with glycerin as a by-product.
The First step in the process requires that the methanol and catalyst be mixed together. Then this mix is placed in what is known as the reactor or mixing chamber along with the used oil that has been previously filtered to remove fatty acids and debris. This mixture is agitated and usually heated continuously 8 to 14 hours. The fat or oil used is converted to esters during this stage.
Removing excess methanol is the next step of the Biodiesel Process. The methanol is usually removed by a distillation process. The removed methanol can be reused, in later biodiesel production but can become unstable if it absorbs too much moister. Constant quality testing of the used methanol needs be done to ensure quality of the product.
Methyl esters (diesel fuel) and glycerin are the two major compounds created from the reaction process after removal of the excess methanol has been removed. Gravitational separation is used to separate the two products, since they have different specific gravities. Methyl esters (diesel fuel) are the lighter of the two and thus float to the top while the glycerin settles to the bottom.
The next step in the biodiesel process is to wash the methyl esters or diesel fuel to remove any residual catalyst. This step is just as it sounds, water is use to wash out any remaining catalyst then is either process dried or left to air dry over several days. Process drying is preferred over static air drying because of the time involved.
This outlines the overall biodiesel process. So is making biodiesel in your future if it is there are some things to consider before you set up your biodiesel processing plant in your out building or your garage. If you noted in the process outlined above there are two waste products or byproducts created from this process. Glycerin and waste wash water.
While neither should be of much environmental concern, they are. Both will have some level of contaminate in them and will need to be disposed of in some manner or another. Though there are several options for both, you need to be certain of the manner in which you will be disposing of your byproducts from the biodiesel process. If you do decide to make your own be certain to do your home work well. Consider things such as spillage and waste product disposal before you begin or you could find yourself having serious legal issues.
More over it might be well to consider how effective your supply of used oils is able to be, will it be sustainable? Is there a big enough supply of used vegetable oil, waste or used animal fats or oils in your immediate area to justify the expense of setting up a biodiesel processing facility even on a small scale? You need to consider all the costs involved, including but not limited to the disposal cost of byproducts.
Making your own biodiesel might not be as attractive as you once thought it to be once all the relative cost is added in. Is biodiesel production a worthy pursuit? Indeed it is, but it might be best left to those that have the ability to produce it on a commercial scale. A plant designed and dedicated to the production of biodiesel will be better suited to deal with the issues that arise from the biodiesel process. The environmental concerns will be much easier to regulate at a licensed facility then they will on everyone's farm or in the back yard or the neighbor's garage.
