People wanting to break away from dependence on foreign oil have begun to make the
Ethanol Conversion. But what does that entail? Well it means either spending the big bucks to purchase a new flex fuel
vehicle or purchasing an ethanol conversion kit from one of the many manufactures of these devices.
The procedure is not overly complicated but is something that should probably be done by a person trained in the conversion technique. That being said, there really isn’t anything stopping those who are technically motivated to make the
Ethanol Conversion by themselves.
What is recommended is that the vehicle to be have the ethanol conversion procedure be in good mechanical condition. Most cars built since 1995 that have OBD II systems should be able to be converted. Not all cars and trucks can, you should do some checking around to see first if your particular vehicle can be converted. The internet is full of sites with this kind of information. Most will have options for different kit manufacturers.
The recommendation is to have a complete tune up prior to the conversion including changing spark plugs, all engine and fuel filters as well as the vehicles oxygen sensors. The reason this is done is to keep the burn of the fuel as efficient a possible upon the conversion. A scan tool should be used to make sure the car doesn't have any DTC’s set in the computer. DTC stands for Diagnostic Trouble Code which is how the computer communicates though an interface what the problem is or the area of vehicle operation that is of concern. All DTC’s should be resolved before attempting an Ethanol Conversion. Once the vehicle is in proper running condition, with no DTC's set in the computer, oxygen sensors replace and tune up complete the ethanol conversion can begin.
The actual conversion is an easy usually three step process. First the ethanol conversion kit's injector harness is connected between the fuel injectors and the original vehicles harness. Then a convenient position to mount the control unit is found and the control unit mounted. IF the harness between the injectors and the control unit is long enough it may be advisable to mount the control unit inside the car if possible. Lastly most units will have a ground wire that needs to be mounted to the engine or to a known good ground.
With that completed the vehicle is now considered a flex fuel vehicle that can run on gasoline or ethanol or any mix of the two. The control unit senses the fuel mixture and adjusts flow through the injectors accordingly.
Oh one last thing you might want to consider before doing an ethanol conversion. You might want to check your area out to see how many filling stations actually have fuel available for flex usage. Most will have the 10% ethanol gasoline blend, but fuel will actually have
E85 or any of the other ethanol blends. So if the fuels you desire to use such as E85 or straight ethanol are not available in your area, doing an ethanol conversion might be a bit superfluous.
