I’m sure that by now we have all seen those little Solar Power light fixtures along sidewalks and garden areas, and thought to ourselves how nice. You may have even thought about getting some yourself, some of you maybe even have. Those small inexpensive solar power light devices are a mere pittance of what is available today. Let's think a little differently for a bit, not outside the box, but rather let's expand the size of the box. Let's go beyond simple sidewalk decoration and consider lighting much of our home with solar power light.
Can we actually do this and be not only green, but cost effective as well? It is entirely possible, in fact it's being done more and more each day, there are many homes across American with solar panels have gone entirely off grid. How much money would that be in your wallet each month? Think about not having that electric bill of $150 or $200 or even $300 a month, you do the math. How much could you afford to spend on a solar power light system if you didn’t have that bill?
The average electric utility cost per month in the United States is around $300 using 791 kilowatts as the average usage. Please understand that these figures are purely subjective to where you live. Some might say their cost is much lower while others will note that their cost per month is actually much higher.
The point is, if you put the amount of money you spend each year into a solar power light and electrical system, in a year or two's time you would be putting money in your pocket.
Solar electric panels convert the sun's energy into electricity for use in your home via a power-conditioning device called an inverter. The inverter makes solar electricity compatible with the power you get from the electric power company. Most solar systems are tied into the grid system, meaning they work in cooperation with your utility company providing power to cover the energy needs for your home. You can also add battery storage with solar systems in situations to help better utilize the power of the sun adding reliable backup power if needed.
Solar power that your system generates is either used locally within your home or sent back to the power company thorough the same line that supplies your home with power from the electric company, spinning your meter backwards. So your monthly bill is reduced by whatever amount of electricity that your solar power light system generates.
Most states and power companies in most municipalities have what is called Net Metering, which is a system whereby customers who have solar electric systems can get paid for the excess energy they generate . Each company usually has their own policy for payback of such generated power.
So depending on what type of solar power light system you install, you could not only lower or eliminate your electric bill, but in some instances actually make money by selling your excess power back to the utility company.
